…. In Frederick County, that is. Sure, we could pretend we know all the best spots in the greater DMV area, but the truth is that we have our favorites around here, and if you’re from a bit further afield, they’re worth the drive.
It’s hard to beat a sunny fall afternoon in an apple orchard near the rolling mountains.
If we tell you our favorite spot, will you promise to take good care of it?
Here’s how you get there: you take Rt 15 to 340. and take 180 towards Burkittsville. You go over a little stream that curves around thin trees just turning gold this time of year, and after a big dip in the road and another turn to the right, you’re there. Distillery Lane.
Even the grumpiest person couldn’t have a bad day here.
There are rows on rows of old apple trees, starting with those 1000 first planted trees from the early 2000’s. Now they have over 3,000 semi-dwarf trees one nine acre beautiful acres and over forty-five apple varieties. They even grow Bramley apples, the same kind our beloved great dane mix is named after. You can read more about their apple varieties here.
You won’t find many of the grocery store varieties here, but you will find fields and rows to get lost in, and maybe one of the stray cats that wander the property.
It’s kind of a paradise – and normally there’s even a food truck or two.
If you’re hungry and laden down with apples, an apple crisp is always a good bet. You’ll want a gorgeous dish to bake it in, of course, or maybe one that looks more like this. I’m partial to the gold and matte black look, personally.
We have a great apple crisp recipe coming soon, so stay tuned! (And while you’re waiting on tenterhooks, Sur la Table has a phenomenal sale on Staub cookware going on – up to 50% off some of their best items. Go get you some and we’ll meet you back here with some dessert and maybe a hard cider or two)
Just a note: this year, due to COVID-19, there are understandably restrictions on pick-your-own apples, but you can still pick up their heritage apples and hard cider like always. They’re even offering curbside pickup!
